Segue has developed websites for multiple clients using the Drupal open-source Content Management System (CMS). This has proven to be an excellent platform for website development due to its ease of use and multitude of modules which can enhance a site’s capabilities. However, despite our past successes in implementing Drupal websites, Segue recently encountered some difficulties with Drupal in supporting the demands of the High-Traffic, High-Availability websites of one of our customers. Part of the evolution of the Web 3.0 is a push toward making the experience on any given website similar to perusing a large database. In order to extract the data we’re looking for, we must first understand how entities and instances are stored on that website, and how those entities relate to each other. This representation of knowledge about the entities within that domain is called an ontology. Once we have the ontology defined for a data-driven application, we can mediate the data interchange between it and any other application.

If you’ve never watched Deadliest Catch you should. It’s an entertaining reality TV show, that airs on the Discovery Channel, about Crab Fishermen who brave treacherous Bering Sea waters to haul in profitable Alaskan King crab. The show has all the drama of people working together under high amounts of physical and mental stress to make a living. It’s very much a team environment where everyone serves an important role.
